What a tremendously charming bundle of joy that girl is you can’t imagine her not smiling. I was immediately reminded how much I adore Stacey Solomon, who presents it. So, I tuned in to Sort Your Life Out to see if I could learn anything. But a little bit acts as a magnet for everything else. Too much clutter is oppressive and chaotic. No clutter would be lonely and bleak, I think. You know how it’s been proven that people are more likely to chuck their old apple cores and Coke cans onto the street if the street’s already covered in litter? So it is when you’re happy for your sideboard to groan with candlesticks, newspapers, framed family photographs and salt-and-pepper shakers shaped like ducks, but not keys, stamps, batteries, scissors and old letters from the council. Thus it is particularly difficult, for me, to distinguish between what needs tidying and what is crucial homemaking, and then stay on top of it. “There’s no need to whisper,” I said crisply. During the first poker game I held at our dream home, I came into the room to hear one of the players whispering to the others: “It looks like an old lady died here.” I like a sense of fullness and abundance, patterned carpets and floral wallpaper, fat chairs and working fireplaces, books and toys and trinkets, old carved wardrobes that might lead to Narnia.

But that’s not where my inclinations lie. You just sweep all evidence of human existence into a bin liner and you’re done. If your dream home has fresh white walls, sleek laminate flooring and glossy surfaces bare but for a scented candle and a copy of Vogue, I imagine it’s quite easy to tidy. If I move two pairs of shoes into the wardrobe, four more appear under the sofa.īut also, these shows share a minimalist taste that I don’t have anyway. The amount of stuff piled on the surfaces remains the same however much I shove out of sight it’s a constant, like human suffering. I find it hard enough to imagine keeping the bedside table clear of half-read novels, torn-out recipes, old asthma inhalers, miniature Hatchimals and odd bits of metal I can’t throw away in case they’ve fallen off something important, never mind crafting a pair of hand-painted drawers to slide under the bed itself to create a perfect hidden storage area for spare sheets and homemade lavender bags. They reflect a state of tidiness and good repair way beyond what I already find impossible to achieve. I haven’t seen one for years (apart from a single episode of Amanda & Alan’s Italian Job, but they were mainly knocking a wall down and talking about house prices in rural Italy) and the ones I’ve seen in the past were always depressing. These décor programmes set the bar too high, in my view.
